What is the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex?

The CDSCC is one of three deep-space tracking stations that form NASA’s Deep Space Network, alongside facilities in California, USA, and Madrid, Spain. This global positioning ensures constant contact with distant spacecraft as Earth rotates. The Canberra complex, managed by CSIRO on behalf of NASA, is the only station in the Southern Hemisphere, making it vital for global coverage.

The complex operates a series of massive radio antennas designed to send and receive signals from spacecraft some billions of kilometres away. It has been instrumental in supporting missions such as the Mars rovers, Voyager probes, and the Artemis programme, helping to relay critical data back to Earth.

A History of Space Communication

Opened in 1965, the CDSCC has been part of every major NASA deep-space mission since the Apollo era. It helped transmit signals from the 1969 Moon landing, assisted the Voyager spacecraft as they travelled beyond our solar system, and continues to communicate with rovers and orbiters exploring Mars today.

Over the decades, the station has upgraded its technology to keep up with advancements in space exploration. Its largest antenna, DSS-43, is a 70-metre-wide dish, making it one of the most powerful deep-space antennas in the world. In 2020, it underwent significant upgrades to continue supporting deep-space missions, including communication with the Perseverance rover on Mars.

Why is CDSCC Important?

Without the CDSCC, many deep-space missions would struggle to send back crucial scientific data. The station enables:

  • Real-time communication with spacecraft exploring the solar system and beyond.
  • Command signals to be sent, adjusting the course or operations of probes and rovers.
